The dark lines are 1/8" accent strips from a chocolate-colored western red cedar board that I found.

The hull and deck edge strips are bead and cove, but the light and dark deck strips are but-joined. This was my first experience NOT using bead and cove on part of a boat, and I found it a lot harder to make sure that all the strips were level, on the same plane. If they're a little bit off it means a lot of sanding, or re-do. I'm sanding now...

The light colored deck wood is also western red cedar, but a very light-colored board. The hull and deck edges are made from, you guessed it, western red cedar. The whole boat is western red cedar except the external stems, where I am using mahogany because its a little harder.

The deck design that I chose is very similar to one I saw in an R2K2 photo of someone's Spring Run. I was very impressed with it and after I looked at the wood I found and the sleekness of the Night Heron, I thought it would be a good design to show off the natural color diversity of western red cedar.
