I would first use an Aluminium polish to remove the existing oxides. Then a wax polish to keep it from oxidizing again and help you wood slide cleanly. But not too much wax or you will not get good glue saturation when the wax rubs off on the wood. Polymer car waxs are good if you wait 24 hours for them to dry. Do it Sunday night and then it will be really good to god the next weekend.
