I cut my cockpit recess hole with the saw vertical all the way around. This made fitting the trim strips and recess pieces relatively easy (except for the first one!).

To fit the little recess pieces, I angled them approximately using a over-turned belt sander, and then fine fit them using a rasp made from 60 grit sandpaper glued to a scrap wood strip.
