I have always precoated and never had any layup problems. I have read often enough that not precoating can lead to epoxy starvation and therefore, some problems with the glass lifting from the wood. It would seem to me that precoating is being "safer than sorry", especially for a newbie building a first kayak. That's my $0.02.
