Jim,
Where I used to work they had those foam packets. You would put one in a box and then put a PC monitor on it. It would grow around it. It is a common method of providing protection for shipped items. If you bought the ones for non medical use from the supplier, it would cost 25 to 50 dollars US.
However, once you get the shape in the foam you still have to make a seat. The urethane foam is rigid and crumbly and would deteriorate if you actually used it for a seat. I assume the medical people used it as a mold. You can do the exact same thing with a bag of cement. Put it in a garbage bag and sit on it. You can then cast a fiberglass seat from the cement mold. (I think I got this idea from the archives here).
My reference for making the foam seat was www.kayakfit.com. Does anyone have any other useful references? I would think that this would be a necessary thing for getting disabled people in kayaking. I would think they could use a custom seat.
