If you use bias cut cloth it will conform quite nicely around the combing. You may be trying to make the cloth do too much at one time. Try going up and over the combing from one side, let that cure till the green state and then come up and over from the other side, rather than trying to go up, over and down in one shot. The frustration level will be lower doing it in 2 steps.
