what abt taking clear packing tape over the o/s of the veneer pces, putting glue on the yak and 'taping' veneer in place. after in place can cut away the excess on the advancing side.
the tape will allow more bending with less breakage as the outside is restrained, as well as keep it down while glue cures.
probably have to be careful removing - possibly just a little heat w/ heat gun so edges don't fray.
