: While I receive a fair amount of spam, I don't get any from the address I use
: on this bulletin board. However, if people feel this is a problem, I can
: configure the bulletin board so it does not display the email addresses.
: Instead if you wanted to email someone you would be given a form which
: would email them for you without telling you the address you are sending
: to.
: At this time the script does not send the email address to spiders and
: harvester bots. For example compare
: http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi/noframes/read/67068
: to the cached version on Google:
: Notice that the email address does not appear in the cached version. This is
: by-no-means fool proof. A spider program could disguise itself as a real
: person. But, so far it seems to work.
: While I can make it so the email never appears for anyone, I think there is
: some value in making it easier for people to start off-BBS discussion. The
: email-form system would work OK, but would not be as convenient.
I for one don't see the present situation being the problem. I've used this site for over 3 years, pictures and all and never gotten a SPAM message. However, recently I got stupid and opened an account on Yahoo so I could get paddling info from a group paddling out of Morro Bay Calif... and since then, I started getting 4 - 8 SPAM messages a day.... I cut the account, but it's probably too late now.. The mistake I made was linking the Yahoo to my Comcast account so I wouldn't have to go outside of my account to pick up their reports....
Bingo!!
4 years of SPAM free existance gone...
But.... I do an Auto Block on them as they come in and that's kept them down to a minimum... The two or three I get now are annoying, but taken care of in a few seconds, never to be heard from again...
Comcast.net has pretty good filters and I don't figure I'll get too many, but I have learned a valuable lesson.... Stay Away From The Cheap/Bargain Servers... again, you get what you pay for ( or don't pay for ).
I say leave the BB alone... the problem is NOT here...
