In Response To: Seeking: Skirt that fits... (Jay Doorly)

I needed a spray skirt for my rebuild. I can't buy one because I made an enlarged cockpit opening so my handicapped wife can use it. I bought some heavy nylon that I plan on using to make my own. I took rolled newsprint to create a template by laying it over the cockpit and tracing the outside edges of the coaming. I measured the lip around on the outside to the riser so I know how much material I need to create a spray skirt wide enough to allow for a complete wrap around the coaming. I'll add enough extra width to enable me to sew a hollow hem so I can run some bungie cord through to tighten the spray skirt when it is ready to be used. I'll cut the opening in the spray skirt with enough extra width to give me or the wife at least 10 inches. The wrap-around part of the spray skirt will be as per usual for spray skirts. I may even add some kind of pattern in the skirt, stripes or something, to make it a little more interesting.

My point here is that if you can't buy it, you can make it cheaper. Use someone else's spray skirt as a model to work by or figure out something for yourself. I hope this helps you. It takes less than a day to make one. I think it was Ken Sutherland who made one out of neo. Track him down and ask him how he did it (see his posts on the Trips Board).
