Hey Patsy!
Look at Nick Schade's book "The Strip Built Sea Kayak", pages 82-83. One thing I do is after I've done the tapering, I sand the shaved side to fit in the cove (round it off) of the strip it is going into. All my strip building experiences have been with bead and cove. The hull of the kayak I'm working on was done cove up, so when I needed to insert the cheater strip I planed (block plane) the bead side, to keep the cove for the next strip that was to be laid in. Susan Van Leuven covers the topic too, in "The Illustrated Guide to Wood Strip Canoe Building", pages 59 thru 60, with good pictures on page 60. Ted Moores covers it in "Canoe Craft" (first edition), page 82.

Hope this helps you visualize the process.
