Sorry. I assumed you would get plenty of responses. I have found that about the only way to address a problem such as you describe is to mix color with the epoxy and actually dab it over the affected area with piece of old cotton rag. You are no longer staining the wood, but actually "painting" over the affected area with an opaque color. With careful dabs, swirls, judicous feather dabbing, whatever it takes, you can probably get the job done adequately. Lightly sand and feather it in. Then apply another coat of epoxy over the whole thing. If the area is too large to be an artistic wood grain imitater then you may need to apply strategic pin striping or other pattern. You need to be very careful in scraping and sanding any stained wood...until you have enough material on the object to protect the stain.
