Just a thought... I have stained a curving pattern across the deck panels of the Merganser I am building, and will paint the hull panels, carrying the paint up over the shear a-la-CLC, with a 1" band coming across to separate the stain design from the bare okume.
You might want to consider something like this, and simply cover the "mistake" with an additional design component.
No one will ever know but you.
