Actually, in my previous response I thought it was not a "Train Wreck" situation. I guess I should of made that more clear, as I wanted to encourage you to repair it instead of starting over. I had the same thing happen to me when I stained a large homemade fish tank stand. The yellow glue would seep into the grain and that area would not take any stain. It looked very patchy. I used a acrylic glaze that acts like a tranluscent colored varnish. I dabbed away at all the light spots until they dissappeared. And the grain still shows through. The stand probably has as much area as your kayak and it only took me a couple of hours to repair. I would highly recommend the approach I mentioned in my previous post. It is a very controllable process.
