Here is a different strategy:

-Fix the stain as best you can
-Stand 20 feet from the boat
-If you can still see any imperfections in the boat move back 3 feet
-Repeat step 3 until the boat looks perfect, keep that image of the boat in your minds eye.
-Walk quickly to the boat and continue building.

I had some aspects of my boat that were less than perfect but after a year of great paddling in the boat I'd be hard pressed to remember what they are. The boat looks and performs great. Yours will too!!
