Are your 2x4s good and dry? Will they stay that way in your workspace? If so, I would give your scarfing idea a shot, but if there is any possibility of warpage due to humidity, I would stay away from it. Personally, I bought a very high-quality kiln-dried Douglas-fir 2x4, 16' long, and it has been perfect. Cost about $30 Cdn, and no worries about producing a crooked box-beam.
