Yo Nick

We have that stuff in NZ. And I used it on epoxy unthinned. It seems to have an awfully long recoat time that I find annoying. But by doing the deck one morning and leaving it for 24 hours, I can do the hull the next day and so on. The new formular seems to be a bit tacky (despite being way past touch dry after 24 hours even in our cold southern summer weather and I found it necessary to put some grease proof paper on the places where the 'fresh varnish' was resting on my supports.

All international thinners come in the same coloured container and I have bought them all one by one, by mistake when making rushed purchases (very cunning but annoying marketing plan).

The enamel thinners seems to be a white spirits/petrol based thinner. International have universal thinners which I mostly use because the epoxy thinner is so toxic. Never buy the P10 thinner coz that is even more toxic over and above the epoxy thinner and I have no idea what you use it for.

I think anything would thin the varnish if you wanted to - your basic mineral turpentine should be ok.

I gave up on the little foam brushes and wiping on varnish with a rag technique. They all worked, but I convinced myself that brushing was therapeutic, got the varnish on thicker and did a reasonable job. In the long run, varnish = ultraviolet sun protection and thick is good for my kayak. Also varnish is fairly forgiving and a dodgy brush stroke effect doesn't look too bad at all from about 5' or more away.

Cheers Pete
