I think John's post is right on the money regarding an all-glass build.
My revolutionary (that is, completely wacky) idea has been to use Coroplast rather than plywood as the core material. Ugly, and you'd give up a fair bit of impact resistance and stiffness, but all that air could make a lightweight and cheap build.
