: I'm building a stripper but would like to see you all argue about what is the
: lightest reasonable kayak possible using stitch and glue or skin on frame
: technology. It wouldn't need to be really durable or strong, but it would
: need to be a rather large design, I'm 6'3", 220. I know that sof yaks
: are usually lighter, but I'd like to see how light both designs could be
: made, a fun next project for me. Let the war begin.
I built an ultralight using Platt Montfort's design approach by taking the station forms from my Dragonfly and stretching it a bit. It's a surprisingly strong construction approach. Aside from the hard-point area around the cockpit, I used 1/4" cedar strips and maple veneer to make the boat. It's primary home is with a couple who uses it a lot, both here in Ohio and down in Florida. The dacron is surprisingly tough, and I can rest my 220lbs on the back of the coaming with no problem. It's seen 2 seasons of regular use with no leaks or tears. I may build another this winter and make it lighter since I learned a few things the first time around. It's very quick and responsive.
Also the building approach is a dream with next to no sanding, etc.
