That is COOL!
I'm taking it that you can paddle this in rough water and breaking waves? have you tied loading it down with gear for a couple week trip? Is there room for gear and does it go in and out easily or are there ribs to gets in the way?
Where can I get more info on the dacron? Also, does it repair easily? I assume that duct tape sticks pretty good which is all that you really need anyhow. I patched up a gutted Folbot on my last trip usig that ever-amazing 3M clear duct tape. That folder was slit open on a oyster shell apparently, and right through the Hypalon for around 2 feet. Hypalon is some really tough stuff, it's on my industro climb suit for crampon protection, on the knees, butt and elbows, and doesn't look the least worn over the years
You know, I've been on this kick for the ultra-lightest yak for a year now, but it has to be able to take abuse including big surf and as I've found, rogue waves which are more common in some areas then I thought. I've tossed around an idea a wide, flat CF and kevlar ribs/section with thin wood stringers. The stalling point is the skin. This idea I've been working on with our friends and it always comes back to the traditional ways (his is composite layup like Jack's and mine the wood with composite inside and outside.
Still, I'll tell you, being 220 and sitting on the coaming is a real testimony, not to mention lighting the ultralight fire again with the Statue of Liberty (from heavy yaks) image. With a yak that light one can twirl the thing overhead while hiking to the launch point. None of this lugging and sweating and gasping and groaning biz. Talk about serious style points!
: I built an ultralight using Platt Montfort's design approach by taking the
: station forms from my Dragonfly and stretching it a bit. It's a
: surprisingly strong construction approach. Aside from the hard-point area
: around the cockpit, I used 1/4" cedar strips and maple veneer to make
: the boat. It's primary home is with a couple who uses it a lot, both here
: in Ohio and down in Florida. The dacron is surprisingly tough, and I can
: rest my 220lbs on the back of the coaming with no problem. It's seen 2
: seasons of regular use with no leaks or tears. I may build another this
: winter and make it lighter since I learned a few things the first time
: around. It's very quick and responsive.
: Also the building approach is a dream with next to no sanding, etc.
