Some folks use house paint. Mark Rogers and Svend Ulstrup make their own oil paint for coating their kayaks using chalk, turpentine and boiled linseed oil. The marine enamel that the Greenlanders often use is very toxic and puts out some powerful fumes ... they generally paint them outside.
