: I am building a One Ocean Storm LT and am close to fiberglassing the hull. I
: have 6 oz E cloth, and am trying to decide on just one layer of 6oz or a
: sceond "football" patch over that on the bottom of the hull. My
: 2 Pygmy's only have one layer, but do have a 2" rub strip down the
: keel. Any suggestions, and if it is recommended, how do I do 2 layers?
: Thanks!
Hi Ethan;
I have built a Guillemot and helped a friend build a Great Auk.
The Guillemot has 6oz cloth , 6oz football and bow and stearn rub strips(6oz).
The Auk is the same but without the football.
On a recent trip to The Charlottes we both hit some rocks and scratched the hulls.
The scratches on the Auk were deeper and more noticable but none got thru to the wood.
I sanded both hulls lightly and sqeegied resin into all the scratches, sanded and 2 coats of varnish.
Both boats look great however the Auks scratches are visable and notso on the Guillemot.
My conclusion; Camping boat ---- do the football!
Day boat, sandy beach-----one layer is fine.
PS doing the repairs and adding more varnish is as much fun as building the boat in the first place!!!
Regards Terry
