I use tooth pics but do it differently than Paul suggests.
Use the square type tooth pics rather than round. snip them in half with diagonal cutters (wire cutters). lightly tap the pointed end into all the holes, dry, no glue needed. snip them off close with cutters and sand to surface level with a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a 1x4 sanding block.
The result of using tooth picks is a better look as well as preventing air bubbles in epoxy.
