: Generally if you just touch the glass you wont see any problem, if you go a bit further in you will see the weave when the light hits at certain angle, and if you go further it will be even more obvious. I would say however dont sweat small areas where the glass is visible, it really wont be obvious when the boat is out in the water and you are having fun. I agree varnish does not hide much in the way of discoloration, divots and weave sanding.
