Ethan,
Any time you have long delays between laminations you allow amin blush to come to the surface. If this goo is not cleaned off there will be a poor cross link between layers.
One school of thought is called "wet on wet". If you apply a second (or third) layer as the previous one is stiffening there's no time for the amin blush to come to the surface so cross linking is almost assured.
