1/2" inch is perfect. 3/4" would add a lot of weight. I always tell people to use what you have around or can find for free. I avoid particle board since it's heavy. If weight and cost wasn't a problem, 3/4 would be nice. You can mix and match too. Hopefully you won't have to buy plywood and can find some thrown out.
