: I found info on recessed deck fittings on the web and thought I could make

I've seen this design of fitting and it strikes me that when you apply
load (from deck lines) to the little cross pieces, the force gets transferred
to a really small area of the deck just at the ends of the fittings. Assuming
that the wooden cross piece is strong enough, I can imagine them pulling
through the deck leaving a ragged hole. So the question is, how much load
will you apply ? If you are just using them for bungies, probably not a
huge force. For tapes which you can tighten to hold hatches closed, a lot
more, but not directly upwards through the deck. But for deck lines, which
may be held onto in rescue work, or used to carry a loaded boat up a rocky
beach, you can end up putting a hell of a lot of force on the fitting. I'm
not sure I'd trust these.

You might like to think about an alternative design - most of which would
be equally suited to turning out on a lathe.
