the other methods'll work better, but a jig to start the hole:
take scrap of 3/4 hardwood or aluminum and drill right thru w/ 1/2" bit. with a 3/4" bit, drill in the 1/2" hole (as the pilot hole) to 1/2 the board depth. put dowel in 3/4" side and drill w/ the 1/2" bit from the otherside that is still 1/2".

you still have the prob of going straight.
