: I am going to be making a greenland paddle out of Port-orford cedar within a
: couple of weeks. Any thoughts on what the weight could end up at? It will
: be close to 8 feet long, maybe 7'6". Any thoughts on the length as
: well?
Unless you're extremely tall and strong, you're not likely to need a 96" paddle. It seems that most people use paddles in the 82"-90" range, with 84"-86" being most common.
: A friend suggested making a composite paddle, but the look won't match my SOF
: boat that I am currently working on. My concern is the paddle may be too
: heavy for long distance paddles.
I'm only familiar with POC as an arrow shaft material (wonderful aroma), but IIRC, it's quite light. I would think your paddle should end up in the 30-40 ounce range, dependion on length and cross-section. The buoyancy of a GP makes it feel lighter in the water, so don't be too obsessed with weight.
