: I'm at the point in my skin-on-frame West Greenland kayak were I'm lashing on
: the chine stringers, and I needed space in my shop to start cutting forms
: for a new boat, so I put the kayak on the floor. It seems to me that there
: is a lot of rocker in my kayak. How much rocker should I be looking for?
: Is there any good way to measure this so I could tell if I have too much.

: Thank you,
: Bryan

Beam ? LWL ? Deadrise ?

Assuming the keelson is attached and that your design is of the "typical" 20th century style West Greenland kayak then the usual amount of rocker is about 1.5" - 2 1/2" . The rocker was not necessarily symmetrical but we will assume yours is I measure the rocker on a kayak frame by attaching a string at the point where the keelson meets the angle of the end boards , then measure from the string to the keelson where the distance is the greatest in the cockpit area. Usually the original Greenland hunting kayaks were designed to weathercock ( turn into the wind ) when you stop paddling.
