In Response To: Paddle: maintaining wooden paddles (john rominski)

I have a store bought paddle. I aquired it several years ago.

I prefer wood stuff.

Each year I sand this paddle with 400 grit w/d paper and I give it several coats of marine varnish, sanding lightly between each coat.

This year I gave it five more coats. Simply because I was in need of something to do.

The paddle is in better condition now than when I first bought it.

Varish: Captains or Flagship. Captains flows out better. Flag has more UV resistance. I usually put on a coat or to of the flag and then switch to the captains. The loom just takes a good several coats of wax - and if you have a two piece, then some silicone lubricant inside the ferrules.

Regards.
