Early in November when the weather was turning colder here for the winter, I was laying up the spray skirt lip. I wetted out with MAS slow hardener and resin, then, before it set I was seal coating another part of the boat and I had extra epoxy in the container....it was System 3 resin and hardener...and I decided to use it for a fill coat on the spray skirt lip. Well, it took two weeks before I could touch it with out leaving finger prints. Three weeks later the surface was hard enough to handle, and I had thought it had set. Well today I was doing more work to the cockpit coaming's interior rim and as I rounded off the edges with sand paper, lo and behold some thickened epoxy began to form and gum up my sand paper....How do I express the disappointment, the pain, the grief? I ended up sanding to the wood. Now I'm prepared to start over.

I'm not sure if it was the cold, or if it was laying one epoxy system over another, but the surface was hard to touch on the top layer, and parts of the glass were hardened. My theory is that the System 3 had a nuetralizing effect on the MAS...I wasn't mixing components mind you, and I'm sure the cold weather didn't help. Next time, if I use one brand of epoxy for something, I'll make sure it sets up completely before I lay down a coat of epoxy from another company....And maybe I'll even have the "dream shop", and I won't need to worry about temperature.
