: ...or rather, TWO questions: 1) While I always assumed I'd be getting bead
: and cove bits and doing the cool-router-setup-thing, I'm beginning to
: wonder. I've talked with builders locally who say they're starting to get
: away from using b&c (at least for some parts of their boats). Varying
: reasons - bevels are easier, flat parts of decks don't need the b&c
: treatment, b&c makes cheater strips and other non-linear joints more
: difficult. Any thoughts??

Hi, Glenn-

1. I like bevel vs. B&C, which I abandoned after the first half of my first boat, for all of the reasons you cited. I greatly prefer to spend a few seconds on beveling each strip, rather than spend hours at a router table. Personal choice. I also suspect that it provides a stronger strip to strip bond than B&C, although that's just a guess.

: 2) It seems (to me, at least) that, no matter what type of joints are used on
: the hull and the deck, when it comes to joining the two a bead and cove
: joint doesn't work and the plain ol' double bevel is the only practical
: way to go. Am I reasoning correctly on this one?

2. Yep. I've gradually gone to (devolved?) a double bevel, but not quite all the way, tack gluing the shears together, then ripping the boat in half with pull saw down the shear when done. The slightly open joint gives the saw a nice path to follow, and the rejoin is a relative piece of cake, as the sawn halves rejoin like puzzle pieces. A bit scary, and I did it the first time by mistatke when I accidently glued the shears together. Oops.

Either way, the boat'll come out beautifully. Have a blast! Mike

: Really appreciate the help I've been getting from this board; I've got a
: couple more questions for later in the day!

: Thanks,

: Glenn
