Don't give up yet!

Yep, matching that shear strip is impossible. At least I thought so when I was doing mine. After starting over a half dozen times I developed a trick for making a perfect matching bevel.

First you need to add twist to the strip. Use a steam box or a heat gun. I used a heat gun and was perfectly happy with that. After you have the proper twist lay the strip next to where it will go and put some index marks on the strip and the hull so that you can put it back in the same place every time. Make some rough bevels on the mating edge. Don't try to be too precise on the bevels yet. Now the trick here is to take a length of emery cloth and trap it in between the hull shear and the deck shear strip and simply sand the correct matching bevel into the new deck shear strip. The emery cloth will not cut on the hull side but will conform to it and sand a perfect matching bevel on the deck strip. I used a 2 inch wide belt from a belt sander for this. This technique is probably really easy if you have someone else to hold the strip into place as you work the emery cloth. I managed to do it by myself without too much trouble. I was amazed how easy it was after so many failed attempts at hand beveling.

And I used ½ inch wide strips around the shear area.

Hope this helps and good luck.

: I am building a Greak Awk. I have been wresling, unsuccessfully, to start the
: deck but I can't get past the sheer line. The problem is that the first
: deck strip meets the first hull strip at close to 90 degrees in the fromt
: stations, transitions to 30 degrees or so in the middle stations and then
: back to 90 degrees in the back several stations.

: I wrestled with this strip for a while several months ago and had to walk
: away from it in frustration. I have worked up the motivation to try again.
: I am not having any more success than before.

: I need your cousel. Thanks.
