Wes,
I use Doug Fir for my gunwales and deck beams, and keel and chine stringers, my weights come in at around 32#-37#. I find my wood by picking the stack of 18' 2X6s at the local lumber yard. My boats are in the neighborhood of 18'-19' long and 29"-20" wide.
