As far as glue strength goes, my $0.02:

For a strong glue joint (as strong or stronger than the wood itself), at least the following are required:

1. quality, fresh glue applied at proper temperature and humidity.

2. an ungapped, coplanar, freshly (within 24 hours) planed clean wood surface.

3. 100-200psi clamp pressure for proper time.

The actual mechanical process by which the glue develops strength is too complicated for me to understand, but these requirements are more or less accepted.

With B&C, I cannot meet #2 on at least two counts: not a fresh surface, and not ungapped (at least at my ability of routing ability).

I bevel to flush or slightly open on outside, so that the joint is tight all the way through. If a tad open on outside, then the open area is removed during fairing. No vee on inside, because that both weakens the glue bond and adds weight as the heavy epoxy finds a pool.

This whole point is an angels on a pin thing, I suppose, especially if one has the idea that the wood does not contribute much strength to the sandwich. I do not buy into this idea, however, so I feel that in order to allow the wood to contribute significantly to the structure, I must try to make my joints at least as strong as the wood. Especially on the bottom of the boat. FWIW, IMHO.

Cheers, Mike
