Standard inkjet inks have long had a reputation for degrading quickly with exposure to sunlight. My own inkjet-printed photos are holding up well but then again they are not sitting in the sun. I have read that the colors degrade more severely if they are rushed into use rather than being allowed to sit sheltered for a few days. Also, degradation may be worse where there is high ozone pollution in the air.

There are now pigment-based inkjet inks that are allegedly archival. What they mean by archival (50 years or 200), I don't know. Obviously, for a kayak 50 years would suffice.

I *was* going to add a small graphic in color to my label but your comment about the butterfly has changed my mind.
