Malcom,
I've not put together a Celtic harp, but I have put together a mandolin and a mountain dulcimer. Both kits from a company in Duluth, MN. I finished them both off with linseed oil. I didn't want to use a varnish because I didn't want the coating to dampen the sound. I guess the kit manufacturer recomends laquer (spelling?). Netsearch music makers kits, try www.musicmakerskits.com, I'm not sure if that's the correct e-mail address... they sold or recommended products there... the linseed oil works fine on the instruments I assembled, though the use of them shows. Granted the instruments I put together are quite different than yours.
