I've never tried an inlay because I'm too scared to mess up my decks. However, I have done onlays and you can see a shot on Vaclav's site, kayak builders gallery, Storm LT. After gluing the veneers in place I carefully sanded, especially at the edges and then built up a "ramp" of epoxy round the edges before glassing over the whole thing. If you get close and squint you can see a small ridge in a couple of places but from a couple of feet back it looks fine (remember the 6 foot rule). I'll do the same on my next boat and just be a little more careful building up the ramp before glassing. Good luck.
