Take an open ocean course and a surf zones class. Use there plastic kayak for the surf zones. Afterward you will have some idea and experiance of what to do and what to lookout for. then you can take your boat out and practice at a beach that is not dumping and has a nice sandy beach. It is a very good skill to develop. I like going out for 10 to 20 mile paddles, I land through surf to have my lunch. My puttin and takeouts are in a harbor. The ability to safely land/launch a kayak through surf greatly expands the area you can paddle and increses your safty margen.
