A pretty good book on the subject is COLD MOLDED AND STRIP-PLANKED WOOD BOATBUILDING by Ian Nicolson.

Stip building is a viable way to build even big boats. Lots of high performance one-offs have been done this way. The Gougeon boys have done it, I do believe. It is common to use the method for prototyping and eventually the hull is used as the plug for making up the mold for fiberglass versions.

Cold molding is the more "accepted" of the two. There is also a method where strips are used as the base, followed by veneers laid over. This can simplify the building jig over pure cold molding, since the strips act as the base for the veneers. It is best to lay the outermost veneer for and aft......it is nearly assured that some "print thru" will show up somewhere down the pike. Fore and aft lines look like planking for the most part. Some overlay a cloth layer...others do not.
