Sad tale, Mike, but I can't help thinking of natural selection when I hear stories of this type. It's phenomenal to me that a dude in a small boat would dork over to the scene of an active carcass feeding. Would a sane person do this to a lion on the savannah?

No Kidding! I would add, without hesitation, the cuddly polar bear to that list. I saw footage of one who swam across a hundred yard wide channel at flank speed to drag a small skiff from an ice flow. He capsized the boat and shredded the stuff inside along with the hull's integrity. Reason? He, no doubt, got the scent of a dead seal left in the boat and took it for his own needs. If you had been sleeping in the boat you would have been consumed as well. Monstrously powerful and deceptively quick to close distances that would appear to have some margin of safety. Very sobering.
