Well, that was a misnomer actually. It's not a rub strip, it's just a stem band, but I did put two layers of cloth on the bottom, followed by a strip of tape that went all the way down the middle. It came out very nice, and not bulky at all. I also put a bit more keel than the design called for, which is the part that ended up being hard to 'glass.

You can, however, put a sacrificial strip of wood on the stems that would be replaced over time as it wore out, but in my opinion sanding and putting another coat of epoxy is just as easy as replacing a stem band.
