An idea to strengthen the deck would be to install a partial bulkhead where you think teh deck will be weak. My lightning 17 has one in the rear, if I remember correctly, to provide adequate strength. I have walked on the deck to get into the kayak in tight situations without it buckling. A partial bulkhead is basically an arch that replaces a full bulkhead. Using a partial bulkhead will be less weighty than using tape and epoxy.

Question: what is schmutz?
