WatersDancing has a kayak with one a mariners compass dyed on it. I asked the same question. Don (or is it Dan?) told me that it was actually a customers kayak. She scored the wood with a knife, then with careful application the dye did not pass the score mark. This is just hear-say, but I believe him, a simple test would seem to be in order.
Don proceeded to tell me that dyeing a small area like that is okay, but large areas, will tend to become blotchy over time. I think he said it was, due to fading occuring unevenly.
I've not ever used the stuff though...
