: I am getting ready to build the vertical part of the coaming on my Great Auk.
: However, I have been combing through Nick's book for information about the
: joint of the coaming, but have been coming up blank. It seems to me that
: the joint where the coaming strips meet the deck is quite weak, at least
: until fiberglassed.

: I thought I might strengthen the joint with a fillet. This might allow enough
: strength that I can finish sanding the coaming withoug breaking the it
: from the deck.

: I plan to put a sealer coat of epoxy on the deck before removing the deck to
: sand and fiberglass the hull. After the hull is done, I will put the deck
: back on the forms to sand and fiberglass the deck.

If you are talking about the vertical portion of the coaming, page 113, bottom right. He recommends using roving (heavyweight fiberglass)strands to form the fillet, creating a clear fillet, but I used dookie schmutz. It worked well, and I think is was very necessary to support the clamps while I was adding the lip.I entirely agree that this fillet is necessary, and also that it is placed oddly in the book, but he warns of this in the introduction.

If you are talking about the recess, I found it strong enough sand with a reasonable amount of pressure without any problems, though it did break in a couple places, I glued them back up without any problem.

Hope I was some help, I'm only a couple of steps ahead of you, so this is all pretty fresh in my memory.
