Material: 2x4 > 6

I put six ounce cloth both in and out of my last kayak with extra layers on the bow and stern keels. I still take scratches and gouges on other parts of the outer hull.
On my next kayak, I am thinking that two layers of four ounce on the outside will give me a little more protection than the single six.
From those of you knowledgable on gouge protection, is my thinking valid?
