In the lake of Runn, where I paddle the most the shores are covered with debris from the old mining culture we have. There is a large area here which now are a World Heritage because of this old mining.
The debris is very sharp, like glass or obsidian and I nowadays lay double layers, 120g/sqmeter, over the whole hull. I get scratches but they dont have penetrated this glass yet. I prefer to lay on the whole hull so I dont have to feather the edges. Ok, it adds some weight, but I rather take this few grams instead of repairing after every paddeltour.
The stems gets an additional biascut glass-strip just in case.

: I put six ounce cloth both in and out of my last kayak with extra layers on
: the bow and stern keels. I still take scratches and gouges on other parts
: of the outer hull.
: On my next kayak, I am thinking that two layers of four ounce on the outside
: will give me a little more protection than the single six.
: From those of you knowledgable on gouge protection, is my thinking valid?
: Thanks. Randy
