From other posts in the past and from other boatbuilding knowledge I gather that more layers of thinner fiberglass are stronger than fewer, but thicker, layers. It is even more important for abrasion protection because if you have only one layer, a rather minor scratch can go through an entire bundle of glass fibers, whereas with more layers you would only go through the outer layer's bundle of glass fibers.

But for a kayak, it probably won't make that much of a difference.

One thing I have been wondering about is the use of polypropylene. Has anyone tried it as abrasion protection? I would think it would do very well.

For the record, you could always just buy those abrasion plates made out of kevlar felt.
