: I've been using the traditional 6 ounce (163gr/mē) fiberglass layup. My
: question: is it possible to use a lighter fiberglass - say 5 or even 4
: ounce if you beef-up the deck underside. I'm looking for the best possible
: finish on the deck - super clear. Even better would be no fiberglass on
: the deck. Has anyone experimented with a lighter deck layup? I'm not
: getting the clearity that I would like.
: Thanks for your help and Happy New Year,

you're not getting the clarity on what kind of surface? Regular 4oz will wet-out very easily and be as clear as anything. I'm assuming you're talking about plywood as strip without glass on the exteriror wouldn't be good. Even 2oz glass won't use much more epoxy than a couple coats of epoxy. Is there something in your application/sanding that isn't allowing the 6oz to wet-out clear? I glassed a ChLT16 that didn't have deck glass for three years,,even on an old sealed plywood the regular weave 4oz was nearly invisible except for a couple spots. At some point you have to acknowledge that glass is a necessary part of the construction and ghosts or hints of glass is just part of it unless you're going for a dugout canoe.
