Robert:
As much as I like the idea of watching people sew themselves up (ok, how the hell did you tie the knot??!), most people are probably better off carrying steri-strips in their wilderness medical kit. I spent some time as a combat medic in the Army and rarely found something that couldn't be stuck back together with strips. There are disposable "preppies" wipes that have a skin glue that helps the strips stick even under stress. Strips are also easier to get ahold of (and master) than sutures.
If you are really gung-ho about it, pick up a couple of disposable skin staplers. They are single-use staplers for use instead of sutures. They are fast and a lot less painful than suturing without the benefit of anestesia.
Of course, these methods should only be considered when no medical help is available for an extended period of time, as you can cause serious probems indescriminently sewing up bits of your body or other people's bodies.
